CSCS Green Card Changes

You may have read that there are imminent changes to the CSCS Green Construction Site Operatives Card. In order to encourage higher levels of skills through training and to ensure that site workers with appropriate qualifications can be more readily identified, from 1st July this card will no longer be issued.

It will be replaced by a new CSCS green Card for labourers only.  So, if the operative concerned is no longer a labourer, but working to a higher level of skill, then they ought to apply for an experienced worker card for which an NVQ Level 2 qualification is required. If they are still a labourer then they can apply for the new Labourer Green Card, but either they will need to pass the new Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Level 1 qualification or, pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment touch screen test within 2 years of applying.

This is the web link you need for all the information on what the changes are and what employers and individuals need to know:

You should be able to find all of the Awarding Bodies that are delivering the level 1 award via the above link. CSkills Awards are offering both the Level 1 Award and the Site Safety Plus course.

The link that confirms the SS+ H&S Operatives course is acceptable is at:

The Level 1 award is a lifetime qualification, so once achieved individuals will not need to take it again and will just need to take the Health, Safety and Environment test to renew the Labourer card.

The 1 day Site Safety Plus course is a renewable course and needs to be taken every 5 years. Applicants will need both a current 1 day Site Safety Plus course and a current Health, Safety and Environment test.

Through its grant from CITB the NSITG is able to assist employers in the cost of training to comply with these green card changes on a first come, first served basis. So, if you have firm plans on how to comply, please contact me.
